Seattle To Mt St Helens Loop Drive Via Windy Ridge Itinerary

Mt St Helens Forest Road 99From Seattle head south on Interstate 5 ( I-5) to Exit 68, Highway 12, the White Pass Highway.

At Randle turn right onto Gifford Pinchot National Forest Road 25. Just after crossing the Cispus River you will pass the beautifully laid-out Iron Creek Campground.

Continue climbing to reach FR 99, featured in the video of this site. If concerned that a forest road my be a bit too wild of an adventure, check this route out beforehand, here.

Though twice the distance from Portland, Windy Ridge from Seattle via Highway 12 is only 182 miles, making this a possible day trip.Seattle to Mt St Helens Map

To make your day a loop, after backtracking out 16 miles on FR 99, you may want to turn south upon reaching FR 25, and follow that to the Pine Creek Information Station at FR 90.

Here, turn west headed to Cougar (of D.B. Cooper fame —don't know who he is, just ask locally for all the inside info), and on as FR 90 turns in Washington 503 to Woodland.

Connecting to I-5 once again you can turn south 30 miles to Vancouver (as in Fort Vancouver National Monument—see our Fort Vancouver video article on our sister site WashingtonTravelMagazine.com), and just across the Columbia to Portland Oregon, or to return to Seattle turn north.
